ANDRE McCARTER WILL BE
THE KEYNOTE
SPEAKER AT SGV's ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY Andre’
McCarter is a 1976 graduate of UCLA and a former basketball
player at UCLA under the tutelage of legendary coach John
Wooden. Mr. McCarter was a member of the “Walton Gang” which
won an unprecedented 88 straight NCAA games. He also was the
starting point guard on the 1975 NCAA championship team that
sent their coach John Wooden out as a champion in his final
game. Mr. McCarter went on to play in the NBA and
later coached on the college level at UCLA and several other
schools. For the last four years Mr. McCarter was the head
boys basketball coach at Lake Balboa Birmingham High School.
Under the corporate banner
and as Founder of Standing on the Shoulders Productions,
Inc., Andre’ McCarter is the author of The “Anatomy of a
Champion” / An American Dynasty /Wooden’s Way-Wooden’s
Basketball. The “Anatomy of a Champion” is a pictorial
/narration which chronicle the UCLA Basketball Dynasty under
the tutelage of legendary coach John Wooden. John Wooden
propelled his teams to a championship level of domination of
college basketball. This was accomplished during the most
volatile, anti-establishment and revolutionary time in
American History from 1964 to 1975. His teams won an
unprecedented ten NCAA national championships within a
twelve year span. The manuscript includes hundreds of
photographs, a foreword and letters of support for this
project from Coach Wooden and other notables. The UCLA
basketball dynasty set a standard of excellence for those
who have followed. Coach John Wooden’s philosophies
transcend sports providing a treasure chest of the
successful keys and wisdoms for life.
Andre’ McCarter spearheaded
a UCLA NCAA national basketball championship title campaign
in 1975 much like the one he led in 2003 this time helping
his coach John Robert Wooden be nominated and distinguished
with the highest honor an American citizen can receive. The
president of the United States presented the “Presidential
Medal of Freedom Award to Coach John Wooden on July 23rd,
2003.

Cager Report:
What is your greatest basketball
memory?
MB: I’ve
been around the game all of my
life so it’s not easy to pick
one. I attended my first AAU
tournament at the age of four
months when my father coached my
sister Maria’s team at the 11 &
Under National Championship in
Orlando. Every summer that would
be our summer vacation. I was
always that little sister
dribbling on the sideline hoping
for a chance to jump on the
court during breaks in the
action. I was ten playing on a
12 & under team when I finally
played in my first tournament in
New Haven, CT. Our team caught
the train to New York when we
had time, to see the WNBA
Liberty play in the Garden and
the sights of New York. This
proved to be memorable because
it was the summer before
9/11. We have videotape of the
TwinTowers so after being there
two months earlier I knew
exactly where everything
was. The next summer I played on
an 11 & under team (SGV) in Los
Angeles that won the silver
medal at the National AAU
Championship.

YVETTE ANGEL
SGV Girls Prep Director Generally
considered the most talented (and most highly
recruited) female basketball player ever
produced by Western New York, Yvette Angel
starred for Sister Maria Pares for four seasons
at Sacred Heart Academy. Yvette averaged 23.9
points per game and was the backbone of a team
which went undefeated during her career (as part
of an overall record winning streak of 109
games). She also starred for the East squad at
the National Sports Festival in Syracuse for
three years running, Yvette was recognized as a
Parade Magazine Second Team All-American in
1981.
Angel's exploits led to a full scholarship to
Ohio State. She graduated in 1985 as the
school's fourth all-time leading scorer with
over 1,400 career points, and as point guard,
led the Lady Buckeyes to four straight Big-Ten
titles and a final eight appearance in the NCAA
tournament her senior year. Yvette was duly
honored as an All-Big Ten selection for three
seasons, and as an All-American.
After playing professionally one season in
Spain, coaching beckoned. Angel was appointed
full-time assistant coach at Notre Dame
University in 1989, and she utilized her talents
and intimate knowledge of the game to help spark
a turnaround in the basketball fortunes at that
esteemed school. Her experience in that role
landed her a coaching position with the
Sacramento Monarchs in the WNBA. She then was
the Head Girls Varsity Coach at Bishop
Montgomery HS and won back-to-back CIF
Championships. Yvette has been training
children under her company Net One for the past
couple years and has been actively training SGV
athletes for the past 3 years. SGV is very
fortunate that Yvette has accepted the position
and will be selecting her staff for the upcoming
SGV Prep season in March of 2008. Yvette will
be start coaching immediately.

Wednesday Game #5S:
SGV suffered a disappointing loss to Suffolk County,
the #1 team from New York. SGV was leading by 17
points only to see a strong Suffolk run and lost by
10 points. SGV led in ALL four losses in this
tournament, all losses to #1 teams from their
respective areas and two ranked teams. Suffolk
County was in the same pool as Fairfax County (#1
team from the Potomac Valley). Both teams lost to
Corona Norco, who should be in the finals. I are
very proud of this tiny team, which is one post away
from being a major contender. This was the worst
draw in 10 years but the girls battled. There were
over 8-6foot girls this year and many other girls
over 5’8”. CONGRATULATIONS Coach Komaki!

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –

don’t need to be scored in order to dominate a
game.

more than visiting Cal State San Bernardino
could handle as the Bakersfield sophomore’s 10
assists without a turnover led the Roadrunners
to a 78-56 win at the Icardo Center.
The win was Bakersfield’s 14th consecutive
victory and can finish the season on a 15-game
win streak with a win over Cal Poly Pomona on
Saturday night.
In addition to Arase’s 10 assists — many of
which were of the highlight reel variety —
freshman
Florida Siaosi continued to impress, earning
her team-best 10th double-double of the season
with 14 points and 10 rebounds in just 25
minutes of action. Siaosi led six Roadrunners in
double-figure scoring, with
Rhonda Johnson coming off the bench to score
13, while
Rhondi Naff and
Jessi Loring added 12,
Kelley Tarver scored 11 and
Katherine Smith score 10.
For San Bernardino, center Vanessa Wilt had a
strong performance with 13 points and six
rebounds, while Ashlee Ford scored eight points
for the Coyotes.
This one was all Bakersfield from the
beginning. The Roadrunners never trailed and
jumped out to a 20-6 lead just more than five
minutes into the contest. San Bernardino would
cut the lead to seven at the 11:28 mark of the
first half, but Bakersfield immediately put the
lead back to double digits and never trailed by
less the rest of the way.
Bakersfield closes out the 2007 season on
Saturday night on campus when it hosts Cal Poly
Pomona at 5:30 p.m.
